Ton is a hand therapist with extensive experience in leprosy care, having worked in Chiangmai, Thailand for seven years. Since 1992, he has been based at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam. He earned his PhD in 2004 with research focused on hand muscle strength testing. Ton has coordinated a hand therapy course in the Netherlands since 1999 and co-founded Hands Across Borders, conducting workshops in Asia. He has authored over 50 publications, contributed to textbooks, and lectured in more than 20 countries. In 2025, he received the IFSHT Lifetime Achievement Award.
